New Hanover County to open a shelter tonight; tomorrow

(New Hanover County, N.C.) - In response to the winter storm, power outages, and the extended power restoration times for some areas, New Hanover County officials are working to open emergency shelters.

Noble Middle School will open tonight at 8:30 p.m.  Noble Middle School is located at 6520 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28405.

Dorothy B. Johnson Pre-K Center will open tomorrow at 9 a.m. Dorothy B. Johnson Pre-K Center is located at 1100 McRae Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.

To remain consistent with shelter messaging, residents should weigh traveling against the conditions they face at home. While the shelter is open there are no requirements to come to them, officials are strongly encouraging residents to stay put unless they need power for oxygen machines or similar support equipment.

Remember Your Pets:

Noble Middle School is available to house cats and dogs. Pets are housed in a separate area and owners are allowed visitation at designated times.

The emergency shelters will provide basic meals. Residents are encouraged to bring the following items for you and each of your family members.

  • Sleeping bag, bedroll, or sheets and blankets and pillows.
  • Prescription medications in their original bottle.
  • Items that infants and elderly household members may require.
  • Extra clothing, hygiene supplies, and other comfort items.
  • Personal identification, checkbook, cash, and credit cards.
  • Snacks or comfort foods or any special dietary foods (prepackaged foods only)
  • Items that infants and elderly household members may require.
  • Time occupiers; books, magazines, games or cards.

Items that are strictly prohibited include:

  • Weapons
  • Alcohol/illegal drugs
Other items you should consider:
  • Social Security card
  • Proof of residence
  • Insurance policies and contact telephone numbers for your insurance company
  • Birth and marriage certificates
  • Stocks, bonds, and other negotiable certificates
  • Wills, deeds, and copies of recent tax returns
