Dr. Richard (Rick) H. Cowles, PhD., 67, of Carolina Beach, North Carolina passed Tuesday morning June 17th in the care of his family after a long battle with cancer.
Born December 18, 1946 and raised in Ruther Glen, Va, Rick was the son of Arthur H. Cowles Jr. and Gladys Stevens Cowles. He is survived by three brothers, Arthur H. Cowles III of Greensboro, N.C., Calvin D. Cowles of Newnan, Ga. and Gary S. Cowles of Richmond; his son Brian R. Cowles and daughter-in-law Gina Desimone of Midlothian; and grandson Ian Denby. Rick was a long time resident of Carolina Beach, NC where he was a licensed professional counselor and worked with the New Brunswick County School Board to provide mentoring opportunities for troubled youth.
He had recently moved back to Virginia to be cared for by family and spent his remaining days comfortable and in his favorite recliner with his loyal dog Cooper. Rick will be cremated and return to the beach one day permanently.
