To Council members, Ed Parvin, Jerry Haire and the fine citizens of Carolina Beach,
I have been thinking of a way to expand our space down at the Carolina Beach Lake. As you know we attract many events there and it has become very crowded along Lake Park Blvd, south of the stage heading south to the southern most bridge. After speaking to Ed Parvin he said get it in writing and hand it in. I spoke to Jerry and he felt there was grant money for this expansion.
I would like the Town to consider doing something similar to the Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach. I would like to stretch out 20 to 40 feet into the water with a deck that would expand from the southern bridge area north to include the island. I would like us to backfill the space between the stage and the island thus creating an enormous amount of space. This long wide boardwalk can include water and electric, light poles, sitting areas - with and without shade - tables and/or other type of gazebos. This would eliminate the huge bottleneck effect we get during our events and would enhance Carolina Beach's reputation for being the great destination that we already are. We might be talking about creating tens of thousands of new square footage that would be functional and appealing.
Building a deck would be a great way to preserve the water capacity of the lake as opposed to back filling it in. Ed said this would be a good time to get this idea in with the upcoming budget meetings and the proposed dredging of the Lake. If the costs can be offset with grant money obtained by Jerry, I can't see this being anything but a home run for our great community. I'm sure Greg Reynolds would be happy to design it and have local contractors build it, thus creating jobs as well.
This was just me thinking out loud. I'm sure there are much smarter people that can take this idea and really make it great. I hope town council considers this idea and our strong staff can make it happen.
I would be happy to help in any way to see this project through. For those of you that don't know me, I have been a resident since 1997.
I own and operate a small business since 2005 (Pleasure Island Carpets and Flooring). I was one of the original Freeman Park Committee members and chaired it after Mr. Clark became Mayor.
I chaired the Harbor Commission for a short time and have been the chairman of the Step Up for Soldiers Backyard BBQ (held at the Lake) for the past two years. I recently helped with molding our current sign ordinance by going to Planning and Zoning meetings and following up at Town Council meetings. I appreciate the time you took to read this letter and look forward to discussing the project with all of you. God bless you all for the hard work that you do for our town and God bless Carolina Beach.
