Lady Eagles Girl’s Varsity Basketball Team take 2nd in the Regular Season

Ladies will be participating in the Mid-Eastern Conference Tournament

Senior Night for Jasmine Corbett.

Senior Night for Ingrid Jackson.

• 2/12 – Ashley 58 New Hanover 57 – After a rough 1st half the Lady Eagles Varsity Basketball team used tough defense and 17 steals to rout New Hanover in the 2nd half.
It didn’t look good for the Eagles after a 18-12 1st quarter, but after that the Ladies buckled down on their defense and by halftime they were only down by 3-points 13-10. After the halftime break the Lady Eagles Coach Gale most of gave a good speech to her players. The Eagles looked like a different team in the 2nd half and quickly took control after outscoring New Hanover 18-8 in the 3rd quarter to take a 7-point lead 43-36. In the final quarter the Eagles were able to catch up to the Vikings and take their 1st lead of the game, but Hoggard was able to go ahead by a point with seconds left in the game. The Vikings were then desperately trying to keep the ball out of Eagles star Felecity Havens, but she was able to get it anyway and hit the game winning shot for her team. The win gave the Ladies a chance to tie Laney for the Mid-Eastern Conference Title on Thursday  Night. The Ladies are 17-4 Overall and 8-1 in the Conference, while Hoggard fell to 9-11 and 4-5. HIGHLIGHTS: Felecity Havens had a impressive 25-points was 9 for 15 from the free throw line; Breanna Edwards had 12, Jada Bacchus 7, Chyna Cotton 4, Brittany Butts and Kaili Rich each had 3-points, Jasmine Corbett 2, and Penka Heusinkveld and Braelyn Little each had a free throw.
• 2/14 – Ashley 43 New Laney 49 – This was another battle of 2 halves for the Lady Eagles who were playing against Laney for the Mid-Eastern Regular Season Title against Laney at home this past Thursday night. After the 1st quarter both teams were playing tough defense, but it was Ashley that took the early 3-point lead 9-6.
The Ladies continued to add to their lead (17-10 by halftime) after playing even tougher defense in the 2nd quarter holding Laney to just 4-points. However after halftime Laney’s offense began to break thru Ashley’s defense, but the Eagles were still able to hold a 1-point lead going into the final quarter 28-27. A similar set up to the last time the 2 teams meet earlier in the season, but unfortunately for the Eagles the result was the same as Laney outscored the Eagles 22-15 to take the win and the Regular Season Title. The Ladies are 17-5 Overall and 8-2 in the Conference, while Laney finished 21-1 Overall and 10-0 in Conference Play. The Lady Eagles will be playing in the Mid-Eastern Conference Tournament Wednesday at 6PM at Laney against the winner of the No 6. Greenville Rose vs. No. 3 New Hanover. If they win there they will be playing in the Championship Game at 6PM, location will be determined by whichever team has the winning record.

Senior Night for Breanna Edwards.
