Bozart Family Dentistry Tip of the Week: The Best and Worst Treats for your Children's Teeth this Halloween

When preparing for Halloween, it seems like almost an impossibility that your children’s teeth are going to make it out of this holiday without some sort of negative effect. However, what you can do is try to minimize that potential damage as much as possible. Here are some of the best, and worst Halloween treats for your children’s teeth.    
So let’s start with what to avoid. Obviously, all sweets are pretty bad for your children’s teeth, but some can be even worse than others. Here are some of the worst treats that your children can eat for their teeth this Halloween season ranked from worst to not as bad:
1. Hard Candies and Lollipops (these keep sugar in your mouth for the longest time)
• Jolly Ranchers
• Jawbreakers
• Lollipops, etc.
2. Chewy Candy (sticks between teeth)
• Caramels
• Now and Laters
• Starbursts, etc.
3. Candy with Fillings (sticks between teeth)
• Three Muskateers
• Snickers
• Milky Way, etc.
Some of these types of candies may be your children’s favorites. However, they pack a nasty punch to your teeth in the process.  The best advice that we can give you from a dental perspective is to buy your children candy that is not sticky, so that it clears the teeth and gums quickly versus hanging around for a while exposing their teeth to acid attacks for hours at a time potentially.
On the other hand, there are some better options that you can give your children in order to look out for their dental well being without sacrificing too much flavor. From the best to not as good, some of these better options are:
1. Sugar Free Gum and Candies (artificial sweeteners have come a long ways recently)
2. Powdered Candies (these dissolve quickly and can be poured directly on the tongue)
3. Chocolate (believe it or not, it’s not the best but also not the worst)
Other things that you may be able to do to help look out for your children’s teeth this Halloween season is to try and make sure that they consume their candy with meals and not as snacks.  The reason being, is that it’s not sugar that is as much of your enemy as it is the acid buildup in your mouth that comes from eating the candy. So reducing the amount of times that this acid gets built up will also increase your children’s dental well being.
