Chances are if you are reading this article you may be a Cultural Creative, a term coined by sociologist Paul H. Ray and psychologist Sherry Ruth Anderson presented in their book The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World (2000), where they claim to have found that 50 million adult Americans (slightly over 1/4 of the adult population) can now be identified as belonging to this group.

CC’s embrace living green as they love Nature and are deeply concerned about its destruction, place a great deal of importance on developing and maintaining relationships, place a lot of value on helping other people and bringing out their unique gifts, want to be involved in creating a new and better way of life in our country, do volunteering for one or more good causes and want politics and government spending to put more emphasis on children’s education and well-being, on rebuilding our neighborhoods and communities, and on creating an ecologically sustainable future among other things.

CC’s value ART and movements are springing forth to promote the joy of creativity.  One such organization has recently appeared on our island.  According to Chris Higgins, “Island Arts and Culture Alliance is a newly formed nonprofit organization working to ensure that Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, herein after cal-led Pleasure Island, have a vibrant, vital arts environment.

Our mission is to promote awareness, understanding and appreciation of the literary, visual and performing arts in the island community, in order to enhance the quality of life in our area. Our ongoing goals are to champion the arts in Pleasure Island, to support practicing artists and local art organizations, to encourage economic development through the arts, and to facilitate the growth of our community into a regional arts destination.

The annual Carolina Beach Street Arts Festival is the flagship event managed by the IACA and has grown to be a recognized regional fine arts and crafts festival that attracts hundreds of people and arts from around the area.  The main event of the Festival each year is a community project directed by local artists. Last ye-ar’s festival produce several 10 ft silk batik banners and this year we created a huge, 5 panel mosaic with the help of over 100 adults and children from our community.

On October 24th the IACA will hold its first annual fund raising dinner with an art auction. The beautiful artwork from the CB Arts Festivals along with donations from area artists will be auction and raffled. The dinner is $20 a person and will be held at Lazy Pirate from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Funds raised will be used to support the Carolina Beach Arts festival and other events that support our locate artists and to bring high quality programs for our community.
