“We made environmental responsibility a priority decades before today's "green" movement. Through ongoing initiatives with our vendors, trade partners and customers, we will stay in the forefront of protecting our environment.” ~Sunbrella, In Harmony with the Environment

Karen of Carolina Beach Furniture and I had a great trip to High Point Furniture Market this week.  The trip was exhilarating, exhausting, filled with networking, educational forums, parties and foot soaks.  The highlight for me was a seminar on performance fabrics given by Marcia Blake, a leading authority on home décor and Merchandising Manager for Sunbrella Fabrics.  I have long been convinced that the durability of a solution dyed acrylic fabric, like Sunbrella, far outlives package dyed, piece dyed, or printed performance fabrics. It is like comparing a carrot to radishes.  The first has the color through and through and the rest have the color only on the outside.  Sunbrella has a 6-year life span for color.  It can be cleaned with 1 gallon water to ¼ C dish detergent and 1 C bleach……yes I said bleach.  It resists mold and mildew and if mildew does appear, it is because it adheres to dirt, pollen or bird droppings on the fabric.
My green heart soared as I was quite impressed by the sustainability and environmentally responsibility of this company.  According to their website, “Glen Raven has produced Sunbrella fabrics since 1961.  In 2011, they added a solar array to our Sunbrella plant in Norlina, NC. Capable of producing electricity equivalent to the needs of 47 typical homes, it’s adding substantially to the region’s power grid. Their carbon footprint is shrinking as they have reduced the annual CO2 emissions by over 1,000 tons with the upgrade of all lighting fixtures in three warehouses.
For over 30 years, Sunbrella has recycled its industrial wastes such as yarn, fabric and packaging. As a result, Sunbrella fabrics' five U.S. manufacturing facilities send absolutely NO WASTE to the landfill, including industrial materials, packaging, office and cafeteria waste. As a result the plant in Anderson, SC is recognized as a member of the South Carolina Environmental Excellence Program.
Our unique coloring process eliminates the harmful chemical effluents of conventional dyeing processes.  Because Sunbrella fabrics last longer, people use less fabric and generate less waste as compared to other fabrics that might fade, lose strength or give in to mildew and atmospheric chemicals.  Sunbrella fabric has achieved GREENGUARD GOLD Certification. Sunbrella fabrics are certified by GREENGUARD as contributing to healthy indoor air quality by being a very low emitting interior product.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends Sunbrella awning and marine and upholstery fabrics in shading products as an aid in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin as part of a complete sun protection regimen, including regular use of sunscreen.”
