Ft Fisher to Host Basin Hikes January 28th

Join the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area’s park staff as they lead a hike through the basin trail along maritime forest, back dune, and salt marsh habitat.  Hikes will be led both Sunday, January 28th at 11:00am meeting in the exhibit room. The trail is approximately two miles and will pass the historic World War II bunker. “We will take many stops along the way to learn about all the plants and animals that call this area home! 14th Annual Polar Plunge to Benefit SPECIAL OLYMPICS Kure Beach, Feb 17th

The Polar Plunge is taking place on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Pleasure Island’s Kure Beach Boardwalk, near the Kure Beach pier.  Join us as we take a chilly plunge in the Atlantic Ocean to benefit Special Olympics.  It is an opportunity for the adventurous and the not so adventurous to have a great time and to support the New Hanover County Special Olympics program. You can plunge as an individual or a member of a team.  REMEMBER - NO WETSUITS! If you cannot bare the cold to plunge then join us for the annual 5K run or 1 mile fun walk.  The race will be held in Kure Beach on a certified course and it is open to all ages and skill abilities.  5K runners are not required to plunge but are encouraged to heat up with the 5K and cool down with the Polar Plunge.   
 100% of the proceeds will benefit Special Olympics, New Hanover County, athletes providing them with year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. 4th Annual "The Great Chowder Cook-Off"

Please plan to join us for our Annual Fundraiser at High Tide Lounge, on the north-end pier Saturday, March 17th from 11:00am until 6:00pm. The St. Patrick's Day Lo Tide Run is earlier in the morning, and we invite you to wear your festive green attire to the pier afterwards.Enter your chowder FREE of charge (all varieties) to see how yours compares to the chowder greatness we've witnessed the last 3 years.
Everyone is invited to attend, there is NO CHARGE for admission, a $10 Donation will get you a passport for chowder and we will have FREE hot dogs for those that might prefer something different. DJ Surjunkie Dale Benson is responsible for music. And the Bud Light Girls are planning to attend (Dilly, Dilly!).
We will have an auction, a silent auction, 50/50 drawing, door prizes and our newest t-shirts; white for men, pink for women! And of course, it's all for a great cause - to fund our continuing efforts to educate and inform our communities, its leaders and elected officials, the importance of maintaining a safe and navigable inlet.

Parrotheads Gather January 27th

The Pleasure Island Parrot Heads will hold their January business meeting and a potluck social at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 27 at American Legion Post 129 (located at 500 Bridge Barrier Road, Carolina Beach behind Food Lion). PIPH celebrates the island lifestyle and the music of Jimmy Buffett, while also giving back to local non profits through fund raising and volunteer activities. Everyone is welcome, so come out and make some new friends and learn about volunteer opportunities in the Pleasure Island community. Pleasure Island Help Center Needs For 2018

The needs of the Help Center for January 2018 include: 14 January, Macroni and cheese. 21 January, Dry Pasta. 28 January, Pasta Sauce. Any other canned or packaged food items or toiletries are greatly appreciated. 
For deliveries, the Help Center is NOT at the Rec Center.  It has moved to the former Community Building at 3rd Street and Raleigh Street.  Deliveries are best 10:00 AM to Noon, Monday thru Friday.

Missed Pleasure Island Pageant Set for February 17th

The Island Women and the Island Men are hosting the 2018 Missed Pleasure Island Pageant on Saturday Evening, February 17th, 2018 at the Carolina Beach Marriott Courtyard.  12 of the Hottest local Contestants will be competing to be crowned the 2018 Pageant Queen.  You still have time to enter as a contestant in this popular local Pageant.  Just like the Miss America Pageant each contestant must compete in the Swimwear, Talent and Evening Wear Segments of the Show.  Contestants must be males over the age of 21.  The Pageant will provide fashion consultants to each contestant as well as a hair stylist and makeup professional.  We are also looking for some additional sponsors for this event as this is one of the primary fund raisers for the Island Women and Island Men charities we support.  Plans are to begin tickets sales on January 17th @ Majik Beanz, GoodHops Brewing and the HopLite Pub as well as from the Island Women and Island Men. This event sells out fast each year so plan on getting tickets early. Saturday, February 17th, Doors Open at 6PM - Pageant Starts at 7:30PM!

8th Annual Step Up For Soldiers Backyard BBQ Cook-Off March 3

Carolina Beach, NC – On Saturday March 3rd 2018, between 25 and 30 teams will use their secret sauces, rubs, marinades and lucky tongs to battle for first place and people’s choice awards as they participate in the annual fundraiser benefitting Step Up For Soldiers. All teams will be provided with the same meats and compete under the same conditions and rules designed to give even the team with a good ole Coleman charcoal grill a chance at first place and braggin’ rights! The location will remain at the lake in Carolina Beach at the junction of Lake Park Boulevard and Atlanta Avenue. All are welcome and admission is FREE! Beaches and Boots will be dancing to the tunes of The Cut and Idlewild South – The Allman Bros. tribute band. Arts and crafts vendors will be on-site and additional food and beverages will be available for purchase. Gates open at 10:00 AM, BBQ tasting starts at 11 am - 1 pm while supplies last. 2nd Annual Public Safety Day April 7th at Ft. Fisher

Carolina Beach & Kure Beach Police Departments are partnering together once again to host the 2nd Annual Public Safety Day! The all free community event is something for the whole family to enjoy.  Join them Saturday, April 7th 10:00am - 2:00pm at the Ft Fisher Air Force Recreation Area in Kure Beach. Local police, fire and ems agencies will be on hand with displays. There will also be federal law enforcement agencies from New Hanover County, Military branches, demonstrations and hands on fun for kids of all ages.

Wilmington Symphony Announces Winners of 41st Annual Student Concerto Competition

WILMINGTON, NC – The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the winners of the 41st Annual Richard R. Deas Student Concerto Competition. The winners of the UNCW Division is David Walker (saxophone). The winner of the High School Division is Camden Stohl (violin), and the Junior Division winner is Finian Long (violin). David Walker and Camden Stohl will be featured soloists accompanied by the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra on the Masterworks “Polovtsian Dances” concert on Saturday, February 3rd at 7:30 pm at Wilson Center. (Tickets at 910-362-7999 or wilmingtonsymphony.org) Finian Long be accompanied by the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra at the April 29h “Free Family Concert”.
David Walker grew up in Leland and started playing saxophone in middle school. His band director, Christopher cook encouraged him to continue his musical studies, and he began private lessons with Michael Waddell. Currently Walker performs regularly in a band all over Wilmington. He is studying Music Education and Saxophone at UNCW under Dr. Frank Bongiorno, and plans to pursue a Masters in Saxophone Performance.
Camden Stohl is a junior at Hoggard High School. She began playing the violin at the age of 2 with her mother Anne Stevenson Stohl. She studied with her Mom for 14 years and this fall she started studying with Dr. Danijela Zezelj-Gualdi. She is currently the concertmaster of the Wilmington Youth Symphony Orchestra.  She also plays in the WSYO string quartet, the Stevenson Stohl Tour Group, sings with the Girls' Choir of Wilmington and the Hoggard Voyagers and is the youngest member of the Tallis Chamber Orchestra. She currently plans to pursue a degree in music and would love to play professionally someday.
Finnian Long, 14, started playing violin in an after-school program while in kindergarten in Montreal, Quebec. After moving to Wilmington, Finnian studied Suzuki violin with Redding Farlow-Soderberg. For the last two years, he has studied classical violin with Dr. Danijela Žeželj-Gualdi at UNCW. Finnian attends 8th grade at Roland-Grise Middle School, where he participates in Battle of the Books, Science Olympiad and the orchestra. He also enjoys playing in the Wilmington Junior Strings and racing mountain bikes with the NICA Cape Fear Fins Composite Team. Finnian likes to play many genres of music, especially Old Time, Irish fiddle and classical violin. Today he is excited to be performing Kabalevsky’s Violin Concerto with the Youth Symphony Orchestra.
The competition was judged by Marc Callahan (bass-baritone and Assistant Professor at UNC’s Department of Music), Catherine Garner (pianist and teaching instructor at East Carolina University), and Eric Pritchard (First Violinist of the Ciompi Quartet of Duke University). Biographies of judges are available upon request.
Dr. Richard R. Deas helped create the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra in 1971. As the then-Chair of the UNCW Department of Music he assisted in developing the competition in 1976 as a way to give talented young musicians an opportunity to perform with a symphony orchestra.

Battle of Sugarloaf Dune Presentation & Hike Feb. 10th

Join UNCW history professor and local Civil War expert, Dr. Chris Fonvielle at the Carolina Beach State Park Visitor Center Saturday February 10th at 10:00am for a discussion of the days following the fall of Fort Fisher and the start of the Wilmington Campaign and the Feb. 11th Union assault on nearly 6,000 Confederate troops entrenched in earthworks across Pleasure Island, anchoring at Sugarloaf Dune. Following an informative lecture, Dr. Fonvielle will lead visitors on a 2 mi. hike along the Sugarloaf Trail to view remnants of the works and the 55' Sugarloaf Dune found today within Carolina Beach State Park. Comfortable walking shoes and a bottle of water are recommended.

Star Party at Carolina Beach State Park April 20th

You’re invited to look into the universe during the fourth annual North Carolina Statewide Star Party, a signature event of the North Carolina Science Festival. Come learn about the night sky at the Carolina Beach State Park Friday, April 20th from 7:00pm until 10:00pm. . Join the Cape Fear Museum and Carolina Beach State Park for a fun, free, family astronomy event. The Cape Fear Astronomy Society will have telescopes set up for viewing the night sky, and there will be vendors and many activities for everyone to participate in. Parking will be at the Marina area with shuttles provided. Bring a flashlight and some bug repellant. Event will happen rain or shine. For more information contact the park.

3rd Annual Marina Day May 12th

Join The Carolina Beach State Park Saturday, May 12th for their 3rd Annual Marina Day! There will be classic boats on display, safety demonstrations, vessel safety checks, boating information and the Underwater Archaeology will be on site with displays and information. There will also be kayaks and paddle boards and much, much, more. Food truck vendors will be on site for lots of food and refreshments. Bring the whole family out for the fun.
