Reconsider Taking Our Insurance From Us

By / Letters to the Editor / Wednesday, 17 June 2015 04:00

Hello Mayor Wilcox,
I am a retired employee of the Town of Carolina Beach and I hope you fondly remember working with me. It has come to my attention that you (collectively Mayor and Council) are considering changes to the Town’s insurance plan which will adversely affect retirees.
I am asking that you reconsider changes that would do away with paid supplemental insurance for retirees. The retirees I know including myself were loyal hardworking Town employees. Many of us put our work before anything. I looked forward to not having to worry about health insurance after retirement. Please keep this benefit in place for us.
If you decide not to pay for retiree supplemental insurance in full please consider alternatives. Years ago retirees were required to pay 20% of their insurance while the Town paid 80%. This is not a bad alternative, but please don’t abandon us. I realize that benefits are gifts and can be taken back. I ask you to reconsider taking our insurance from us.
 Thank you
Sheila M. Trott,
Carolina Beach, NC
Editor's Note: The Council took no action on the topic when they adopted the budget at their last meeting. I inquired about any such changes and Town Manager Michael Cramer said the Council will discuss the issue at their June 23rd workshop meeting, 6PM at Town Hall.
