Dear Editor,
I recently visited the Topsail Island Turtle Project, as the t-shirts call it, or the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, as the web site call it. Regardless of what its name is, the place, its volunteer staff, its work, its evidence of community support, all that completely knocked me out.
I came next to tears when one of the staffers told me that local fishermen leave coolers of fish at the center many mornings to reduce food costs for the folks feeding the turtles. I also heard high praise for the local IGA grocer who donates out-of-date produce for the turtles who eat green beans and wilted lettuce.
What an amazing place, what a local asset to this beautiful and amazing community. What incredible generosity and kindness. What important environmental work for these threatened turtles. When I heard that thousands of people visit each week, I suggested to one of the volunteers, "You guys are like the Rolling Stones, huh?" and she readily agreed. How warm-hearted must your readers be to consider such work and love.
