This past week was one of the most exiting week’s of the year to be on the water. Literally, the numbers don’t lie. Over this past weekend the annual US Open King Mackerel tournament was held out of Southport, NC.
This year there was almost 500 boats entered in the event which is a new record. Wow! The fishing was great. What makes this tournament so special is they time it just right for the big kingfish to be right on the beach. This means that anyone with a boat can get out there and have a chance to win. One strategy this time of year that anglers use is to see what is being caught off the piers.
Our local piers were catching them all week going into the tournament weekend. This is simply a special time of year to be on the water. There has been a lot of rain lately which has made the inshore fishing a little tough. The fresh water is running down the river and not only is it fresh but it’s very dirty. There are still some nice flounder being caught as well as speckled trout and redfish. There are very large bull redfish in the mouth of the river and strung along the south facing beach’s. You can fish for these with large live or cut bait, either will work.
For the next month you will find some of the best fishing our area has to offer all year. Hopefully this hurricane, Matthew, will take a path off the beach. If we can get lucky with this storm approaching then we stand to have some great fishing ahead of us.
Pending the storm does make a big impression on our area, please take all of the suggested safety precautions. Good luck and be safe!
