Ashley Spring Break
Tournament Day 2

Sometimes you run into a team that is clicking on all cylinders, and you have a hard time performing to your ability.  The Ashley baseball team experienced that first-hand Wednesday night, as they hosted the Reagan Raiders with a championship game berth on the line.  The starting pitcher for the Raiders dominated the Eagles on the mound, tossing 5 innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 13.  This led to an 8-0 victory over Ashley.
The Raiders gained confidence early, scoring 5 runs in the first 2 innings, on plenty of weakly hit balls that found some holes, but aided with some defensive miscues by the Eagles, who made an uncharacteristic 6 errors during the game.  Donovan Francis started on the mound for the Eagles, and took the loss.  Christian Tafoya also threw for Ashley.  The Raiders pounded out 11 hits on the night, but only 3 of their runs were earned. Offensively, Ashley just could not get much going against a pitcher who was throwing strikes at the knees all night long, and did a great job keeping the Eagle hitters off-balance.  Alex Highsmith and Evan Laverick each collected a hit.
Ashley will be playing in the 3rd place game at 4:30 tomorrow against the Mooresville Blue Devils.  Reagan will be facing the New Hanover Wildcats in the championship game at 7:30.

Ashley Spring Break
Tournament Day 3

The Ashley baseball team sent Drake Overton to the mound in the 3rd place game of the 2015 Ashley Spring Break Baseball Tournament, and came away with a 7-6 win.  Overton threw 6 innings, and left the game in the 7th inning with a no-decision.  Donovan Francis threw the 7th inning in relief, picking up the win, as the Screaming Eagles scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning after the Mooresville Blue Devils tied the game in the top of the inning.
The Eagles struck first as Alex Highsmith led off the bottom of the first reaching on an error.  After advancing to 2nd, he would later score on an RBI single to center by freshman Lee Fentress.
After the Blue Devils scored 4 runs in the 2nd (3 of them unearned), the Eagles would strike back for 4 runs themselves in the bottom of the 3rd.  After Evan Laverick and Highsmith both reached on Mooresville errrors, Francis was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases.  Laverick and Highsmith would come around to score on a groundball by Fentress that was misplayed.  D.C. Russ then pounded a double to left-center to score Francis and Highsmith, giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead.
Ashley struck again in the fourth, as Kyle Hunter Stewart started things off with a single to left.  After Stewart stole second, Laverick dropped a beautiful bunt single down the 3rd base line.  Stewart would then score on an RBI groundout by Highsmith. Mooresville tied the game in the 7th, leading up to the walk-off style finish.  Francis led off the inning with a double, then advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch.  With no outs, Fentress hit a chopper back to the pitcher who forced a wild throw to 1st, scoring Francis with the winning run.
The win improves Ashley's record to 7-4, and they return to Mideastern conference play on Tuesday, traveling to rival Hoggard to take on the Vikings in a key matchup.
