• March 17th - The Ashley Screaming Eagles continued their struggle on the baseball diamond Thursday night, falling to the Purnell Swett Rams by a final score of 11-1.
Trailing 3-1 entering the 5th inning, the Rams scored 8 runs in the last 3 frames to bolster their lead. Swett had 9 hits in the game, and coaxed several walks from the Eagles' pitching staff. Price King and D.C. Russ each pitched for Ashley.
After falling behind 3-0, Ashley would score their lone run in the third inning, as centerfielder Evan Laverick blasted a triple to the left-center gap, and would subsequently score on a Kevin Mintz RBI single through the right side.
Laverick led the team with 2 hits, raising his season batting average to .444. The Eagles will enter Spring Break with a 1-5 record, and travel to Socastee High School in SC on Saturday for a 2 PM game.
• March 19th - In a back and forth affair on Saturday afternoon, Ashley came out victorious with an extra-inning win at Socastee High School in South Carolina by a 10-7 score. In a game that featured 23 base hits, the Screaming Eagles picked up the win behind a solid 2+ innings of relief pitching by Christian Tafoya. He allowed 0 runs and only 2 hits after coming on for starter Callahan Klos, who tossed the first 5+ innings. The Eagles first struck in the top of the first inning, as Reggie Regan drove in Evan Laverick with a single up the middle. After the opponents took a 3-1 lead, Ethan Walters lined a double down the left-field line to cut the lead to 3-2.
Ashley would extend the lead to 5-2 in the fifth, starting with a 2-strike Laverick single. Tafoya then followed with a bunt base hit, before Regan ripped a double. Tafoya then scored on a heads-up baserunning play, as he sprinted home on an overthrow of the pitcher from the catcher. Alex Brooks would then score on an error.
Socastee struck back, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, claiming a 7-5 lead. But after singles by Michael Phillips, Laverick, and Tafoya, 2 runs would score-- one on a sacrifice fly off the bat of pinch-hitter Price King, and the other when Regan was hit by a pitch. Walters would then drive in the winning run in the 8th on single to third base. Two more runs would score on an error by the shortstop. Laverick, Walters, and Regan each had 3 hits in the game.
• March 21st - The Ashley Screaming Eagles baseball squad took on Robert E. Lee High School from Virginia at 7:30 tonight in the first round of the 2016 Ashley Spring Break Tournament sponsored by Coastal Athletics. After watching all three other New Hanover County teams win earlier in the day, the Eagles wanted to be sure they took care of business to make it a clean sweep. Behind great pitching performances by junior Kevin Mintz and senior Trevor Price, the Eagles brought home the 16-0 win, by virtue of the mercy rule in 5 innings. Mintz dominated in his 3 innings of work, throwing only 38 pitches, striking out 7 Lancer hitters, and facing the minimum 9 batters. Ashley would score the only run they needed in the first, when Evan Laverick scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Reggie Regan.
The Eagles would then score 7 runs in the second, and follow that with 7 more in the third. They added one more in the 4th. Eight different players collected hits in the game, with Alex Brooks leading the way with 2. Vinny Farmintino and Callahan Klos each picked up their first hit on the season.
Senior pitcher Trevor Price, who is coming off of shoulder surgery last year that kept him out for a whole year, tossed 2 innings and struck out the side in the last inning.
The Eagles are now 3-5 for the year, and will play in the tournament semi-finals tomorrow night at 7:30 against New Hanover. The winner will face the winner of the Hoggard/Laney game in the championship game on Wednesday.
