Eagles Varsity Baseball Recap: Eagles Go 1-1 on The Week

By / High School Sports / Tuesday, 05 April 2016 04:00

• March 29th - In the bottom of the third inning on Tuesday night at the Ashley baseball field, senior first baseman Ethan Walters rocketed a double over the Laney leftfeilder's head, driving in two runs. Those two runs were all the Screaming Eagles would need, as they posted a 3-0 win over the Buccaneers.
After Christian Tafoya reached on an error, senior catcher Reggie Regan collected his second of three hits on the night. Courtesy runner Sean Ross moved to second on a groundout, leading up to Walters' game-deciding hit.
Ashley would tack on another run in the fifth, as Walters again smashed a double to left-center, scoring Ross again. The Eagles pounded out 9 hits in the game, including 3 from Regan, 2 from Walters and Alex Brooks, and 1 each from Joe Barbera, Luke Winslow.
Meanwhile, Tafoya breezed through the Laney batting order, pitching a complete game shutout. He only needed 70 pitches to toss the seven innings, and only allowed 1 hit. He also picked up 9 strikeouts for the game.
The win improves Ashley's record to 5-6 overall, 1-1 in the Mideastern conference.  The Screaming Eagles host West Forsyth on Thursday for a 5:00 game.
• March 31st - The Ashley baseball team stepped away from conference play Thursday night for a 5:00 game against the West Forsyth Titans.
The Titan pitchers kept the Ashley offense at bay for most of the night, holding the Eagles to 4 hits, and leaving the park with a 6-0 win. Trevor Price got the start for Ashley at pitcher, and was the unfortunate beneficiary of 4 first inning errors by the defense, spotting West Forsyth a 4-0 lead. He pitched effectively for 4 innings, before giving way to reliever D.C. Russ. Russ retired the first 6 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the 6th.
But the Ashley bats just couldn't get going. Ethan Walters and Michael Phillips had doubles in the 7th inning, but were left stranded on the bases.
• April 1st - The Ashley baseball team returned to conference action Friday night, hosting the New Hanover Wildcats. The Screaming Eagle bats were cold throughout the game, resulting in a 5-1 loss.
New Hanover struck with two runs in the top of the first, on a couple of sacrifice flies. Ashley would respond with a run of their own in the first, on a single by Evan Laverick, who was advanced to third base on a Reggie Regan single. Laverick would then score Ashley's lone run on a wild pitch. From that point on, the Ashley offense would only muster on more hit-- an infield single by Laverick.
Callahan Klos took the loss on the mound for Ashley, throwing 3 innings and allowing 5 runs. Price King performed well on the mound in relief, keeping Ashley within striking distance. King hurled the last four innings, allowing only 2 hits, while giving up no runs.
