CAROLINA BEACH - Gaining access to a COVID-19 test in New Hanover County is not as complicated in comparison to long lines in other major U.S. cities. More importantly, it's even easy for people without health insurance coverage to obtain a rapid test with results available within 15 to 30 minutes.
For example, the CVS Pharmacy in Carolina Beach has setup a small testing facility outside of their location offering rapid testing. People have to make an appointment online through the CVS.com website. Availability is based on demand.
Editor's Note: I made an appointment on Sunday night and was able to get tested at many time slots on Tuesday. I selected 4:45pm. I arrived a few minutes early. They call prior to the appointment to go over the process. Then once I arrived, I parked in a nearby space. They call when they are ready for you to enter the facility wearing a face mask. Once inside the tiny little building through the "Patient Access" door, you are given additional instructions and handed a cotton swab to insert into both sides of your nose. Sounds uncomfortable, but it was less annoying than the onset of a sneeze and I only had to blow my nose afterwards. No big deal. The whole process lasted less than two minutes and the swab took less than 20 to 30 seconds. After that, I went back to my car and waited for a phone call with the results. Fortunately, those results were negative. Best part, I have no health insurance. It was free of charge due to a federal program that covers the cost of the test. New Hanover County is also providing testing at various locations.
New Hanover County Public Health continues to conduct outreach testing events at various sites to bring free COVID-19 testing directly to communities across the county, eliminating barriers to access. Testing criteria for these outreach sites is COVID-19 symptoms or close contact to someone confirmed to have the virus. Screening and testing is available at each site by drive-through or walk-up, and is offered by the county at no cost to the resident. No ID or insurance information is needed and face masks will be given to those who need one.
